Student Options

Field-based learning is an important part of the graduate curriculum allowing students to gain valuable industry experience and networking opportunities. Students can explore interests, and use knowledge gained from coursework in their work environment. Field-based options include internships, courses with fieldwork projects, and Global Business Experience programs. Students are, however, limited to taking no more than two of the following to satisfy elective or concentration requirements; Global Business Experience courses, field-based directed studies or credit bearing internships.

The various options and courses available to students are listed below:

A Sample of Courses That Include Field Components:

Course offerings with field components are constantly updated and cover a variety of disciplines.  For the Day MBA Program, courses such as Management Consulting Teams and Business Processes involve extensive senior-level project work for an organization. Other courses involve more specific projects. Contact the course instructors listed in the registration book or your Program Director if you would like to know more about whether courses include a field-based component.

Some field-based courses are completed on an individual basis rather than as a formal class. ES701 and MG705 fall in this category of courses along with individual directed studies designed by students in conjunction with faculty. Information about these opportunities and the approval process can be found in the Guidelines for Preparing a Project Proposal for a Field-Based Directed Study/Practicum.  Print the Guidelines for Preparing a Project Proposal for a Field-Based Directed Study/Practicum to start the approval process.

Internships:

Student internships are work arrangements on a temporary basis that can either be for credit or non-credit. The university and student handle the academic requirements. Students must meet the requirement of 10 weeks of employment with at least 20 hours a week for a credit internship. See the Application Form and Instructions below to verify if you qualify for an internship.  Contact the Program Director or the appropriate faculty internship coordinator if you would like further information on the criteria for qualification.

Students and Faculty Internship Coordinators can get a printer-friendly format of the Application Form and Instructions for all Graduate Credit-Bearing Internships.

Credit Internships:

The following Internship programs afford students the opportunity to enhance self-realization and direction by integrating prior classroom study with experience in professional employment. Requires development of a study plan to identify the student's professional goals and to demonstrate how these goals can be enhanced through an internship experience. Includes regular meetings in which students discuss issues and business problems related to their work experience, and defend proposed solutions before fellow students and the internship coordinator.
