Now in his 19th season as the only varsity men’s lacrosse coach in Bentley University history, Jim Murphy has led the Falcons to an overall record of 147-101 with a 100-46 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play during his tenure.
Bentley’s 2010 postseason berth was the 13th time a Murphy led team has made the NE-10 playoffs, and the ninth time in 10 years. His teams have finished with a winning record in the NE-10 Conference in 13 of 17 seasons in the league, including eight of the last 10. The Falcons have been ranked in the final edition of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division II coaches poll the last two years.
Murphy was named the 2009 NE-10 and New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons a 9-4 record and the first of two straight appearances in the NE-10 semifinals.
He has been named the NEILA Division II and NE-10 Coach of the Year four times each, and has led the Falcons to four NE-10 regular season championships and three postseason titles. The Falcons won their first 20 NE-10 regular season games in the team’s first two and a half years in the league before finally dropping a contest to eventual league-champion Le Moyne in the 1997 campaign. In all, Murphy and the Falcons were 31-2 in the NE-10 from 1994-98.
Throughout his tenure, Murphy has coached six USILA All-Americans, 21 first team All-Conference choices and two NE-10 Players of the Year. He has also seen two of his players drafted by the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse.
Murphy also serves as the Bentley athletic department’s equipment and operations manager and has also been a consultant for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse since 2003.
Murphy is a 1986 graduate of Plymouth State College. He played three years of lacrosse and soccer at Brandeis University before transferring to Plymouth State, where he lettered in both sports for one season. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Education from Plymouth State.
In 2001, Murphy was inducted to Billerica High School’s Hall of Fame, where he also played lacrosse and soccer. Murphy, 48, currently resides in his hometown of Billerica with his wife, Kelly Jo.
