Long-time golf pro Mickey Herron is in his first year as head golf coach at Bentley University.
Herron, who was elected to PGA membership in 1982, is the former Director of Golf at Ferncroft Country Club (Danvers), Gleneagles Country Club (Delray Beach, Fla.) and at three courses on Cape Cod: Hyannis Golf Club (Hyannis), Sandwich Hollows Golf Club (Sandwich) and most recently, Bay Pointe Country Club (Onset Beach).
Active for years in the Cape Cod PGA and New England PGA, Herron was awarded the 2007 NEPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award and the 2006 CCPGA Professional of the Year. Former president of the CCPGA and vice president of NEPGA, he has served on several NEPGA committees, notably the tournament committee and chair of the public relations committee. He also has been chair of interviewing committees for the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund – a Massachusetts based financial assistance organization which aids college bound youth who work in the golf industry in the commonwealth.
Herron currently serves as a rules official for the NEPGA Junior Tour, professional scorer for NEPGA major events, a member of the golf staff at Sandwich Hollows Golf Club and instructor at Ballymeade Country Club junior camps.
Herron has the won the Dutch Wessner Award seven times – emblematic of player of the year within the Cape Cod PGA region. He has played in three PGA Tour events, six National Club Professional championships and three Senior National Club Pro championships. He won the 2008 Martha’s Vineyard Open and the 2002 Sankaty Head Boys & Girls Club Championship, finished second in the inaugural Cape Cod Open and has won six Cape Cod PGA Stroke Play championships. Herron lost in a playoff in 2008 in the NEPGA Senior Championship to Jim Sheerin of the Abenaqui Golf Club in New Hampshire.
Herron played for both the Macalester College golf team (NAIA) and the Univ. of Penn golf team (Div I) in the mid-70’s.
