Three Power Play Goals Help Bentley Secure 4-2 Win over Mercyhurst

WATERTOWN, Mass. - Bentley University improved to 2-0 in Atlantic Hockey play with a 4-2 victory over Mercyhurst College on Friday night at Ryan Skating Arena. The Falcons scored three power play goals on the night, including the second straight game-winning goal by freshman Dan Koudys (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars), which came in the second period.

With the score tied at two in the second period and Bentley on the power play, Koudys put the Falcons in front 3-2 with 5:06 remaining in the period. Senior Marc Menzione (Darien, Ill./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) took a shot that Mercyhurst goalie Ryan Zapolski saved, but Koudys was in front of the net to slide the rebound under Zapolski for the lead.

With Bentley on the power play again late in the third period, freshman Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep) tacked on an insurance goal with 5:48 left after a scrum for the loose puck in front of the net. The goal was the first of Campanelli's career.

Mercyhurst opened the scoring on a Brandon Coccimiglio goal with 6:09 remaining in the first period. Later in the period, Bentley was given a power play when Patrick Goebel was called for boarding. Less than a minute into Goebel's penalty, senior Chris Risi was whistled for tripping, giving the Falcons a two-man advantage for the remainder of the period.

Bentley took full advantage of the 5-on-3 opportunity, tying the score on a Bobby Preece (Bonita Springs, Fla./Fargo-Moorhead Jets) goal. The play started with sophomore Ryan Kayfes (Maple Grove, Minn./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) taking a slap shot from the blue line that Zapolski saved. The rebound though ricocheted right to Preece, who fired a slap shot from the right face-off circle that beat Zapolski high and to the glove side.

Menzione scored an even strength goal at 6:22 of the second period for a 2-1 Bentley lead, but Mercyhurst's Mike Gurtler tied the score 2:18 later. The score stayed that way for just over seven minutes until Koudys' tiebreaking goal.

Koudys had his second straight three point game as he also assisted on the goals by Preece and Campanelli.

Junior Joe Calvi (New Lenox, Ill./New England Jr. Huskies) started in net and made 26 saves for his second consecutive win.

The Falcons will go for the sweep Saturday night in the conclusion of their two-game series with Mercyhurst. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
